"EcoFriendly EcoRide" May/June Issue, 2006 For the first time in its history, the Ecology Center’s annual EcoRide is going to be “climate neutral.” This year, Clif Bar purchased enough credits of renewable wind energy for the Ecology Center to off set the projected carbon dioxide pollution generated by the EcoRide. This includes participants driving to and from the event, route marking, checkpoint setup, and sag wagons.Purchasing carbon credits helps support clean, renewable energy and raises awareness of an individual’s impact on global warming (to learn more about carbon credits, see Clear Conscience, Clear Skies). However, there’s no substitute for conserving energy, so the Ecology Center encourages all EcoRide participants to consider riding your bike to the event or carpooling with other riders. At the EcoRide, riders will drink juice and snack on bagels, sandwiches, fruit and other goodies using only biodegradable plates, cups, and forks. These products made their Ecology Center debut at our 35th Anniversary Celebration and are now a staple at all of our events. The plates are sugarcane based, the cups are made from polylactic acid (derived from plant sources), and the forks are a molded cellulose fi ber and limestone material (to learn more about the green chemistry behind such products, see Green Light for Green Chemistry?). There are numerous other ways that the Ecology Center walks the walk by minimizing the EcoRide’s impact on the environment. Riders are asked to separate their trash into recyclable and compostables to reduce the waste produced at the event. As much as we can, we reuse materials for signs and other supplies. EcoRide brochures, posters, and flyers are printed on recycled, chlorine-free paper, which is a specialty product that often has to be special-ordered, but is well worth the extra effort to protect natural resources and avoid using toxic chemicals. This specialty paper has become more readily available in the past few years, but we’d like to see it become the industry standard. Big events don’t have to be big polluters. With the generosity of our sponsors, support from the community, and a little creativity, the EcoRide is a day of good, environmentally clean fun!
