Lead Free Kids

Lead Policy Priorities

2024 Policy Priorities (in Michigan)

  1. Action Level - HB 5368: Drops ‘level of concern’ for lead poisoned kids to 3.5 ug/DL to align the Centers for Disease Control’s level of concern.

  2. Services for Lead-Poisoned Kids - HB 5369: Automatically qualifies lead poisoned children for Early On special health care services.

  3. Renovation, Repair and Painting Act (RRP): Allows Michigan to take on and enforce EPA’s Renovation, Repair and Painting Rule to ensure that contractors are properly trained to work on homes with lead paint hazards. The EPA will fund this program.

  4. Funding for Filter First. This legislation passed in October 2023 and calls for filtered drinking stations in schools and daycare centers. Adequate funding still needs to be allocated to make sure all schools and daycares are able to install the hydration stations.

  5. Testing Homes: Every home built before 1978 should be tested for lead at the time of sale or transfer of lease. The best way to protect children is to test their homes and remediate lead hazards before a child is poisoned.

2023 Lead Policy Successes (in Michigan)

Universal Testing of all children at one and two years of age will ensure that all lead poisoned children have access to the services and resources that they need and that no child falls through the cracks (passed October 2023).

Filter First calls for filtered drinking stations in schools and daycare centers. Adequate funding still needs to be allocated to make sure all schools and daycares are able to install the hydration stations (passed October 2023).
